These have been very trying times for a lot of people, families, and organizations especially with the huge cut-backs companies are making. Some people had to take pay-cuts, while some lost their jobs altogether.

Which is why I came up with this list to help people get back on their feet. The world is changing and we must adapt quickly or face extinction. It appears like things may not return to normal anytime soon and this pandemic has also exposed the advantage of automating some jobs: meaning even after this pandemic is over some people will not be recalled to their former jobs.

This is the era of remote work, and earning money from could be for various reasons including staying closer to family, working at your convenience, earning extra income, starting a business or even earning while you travel the world.

Here are five (5) proven ways to earn money online from the comfort of your home:

1. Freelancing

Freelancing is simply another term for self-employed, it means you are working without commitment to any particular employer and in this context, it means work for hire or part-time jobs online. Freelancers are paid on per task basis and sometimes per hour. There are so many platforms that provide jobs for digital nomads like myself and those who work from home. These platforms include:

There are so many job opportunities ranging from graphic designers, social media managers, virtual assistants, web developers, copywriters, translators, etc. With earning potential ranging from $200 to $5000 per job, one can actually replace their full-time job with freelancing when you have built a steady flow of income from it. I have been freelancing part-time for close to 3 years now and it has afforded me some nice things including a car and rent, so you can say that’s pretty decent. I only became a full-time freelancer this January. I enjoy a lot of me-time now and I don’t have to wake up to alarms every morning (I still set alarms for tasks though they are self-paced)

Freelancing is not as easy as it sounds and its not as difficult either. When you find what you really enjoy doing and your are really good at it, find a way to get paid while doing it.

2. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is simply helping others to sell by promoting their products or services for a commission i.e. you get paid a commission for referrals that pay for their products or services. And there are several ways to do this, by signing up on:

  • Affiliate Networks or
  • Affiliate Programs (merchant or vendor programs)

The simple distinctions between Affiliate Networks and Affiliate Programs are as follows:

Affiliate NetworkMerchant Affiliate Program
Usually a middleman between the merchants and affiliate marketers.Deals with affiliate marketers directly, no middleman involved.
Handles affiliate marketing for multiple merchants or companies. Hence has access to a large range of products or services.Merchant promotes only the company’s products. Hence, products and services offerings are limited to what the merchant/ vendor has.
Potential to earn more due to wider variety of products and services to choose from.Potential to earn higher commissions because there is no middleman to split the earnings with.
Ease of entry varies depending on network’s requirement.Ease of entry varies depending on merchant’s requirement.

Here are some affiliate networks and programs you can sign up with:

3. Blogging/ Vlogging

Blogging/ vlogging is simply posting interesting content/ videos for your audience on a website (or YouTube for videos), and a website that displays your content in reverse chronological order is a blog. You can post almost any kind of media content on your blog like pictures, videos, text, games, quizzes etc.

This page you are viewing my posts on is my blog, so a blog can be on your website as a secondary content or your website could primarily be a blog site (this means your whole website is a blog), but they are both websites it’s just the primary purpose of the website that determines what it is.

Contrary to the popular definition that a blog is an online diary or journal, things have changed in recent times. These days most blogs are built to make money, to inspire ideas or thoughts, to entertain, and (or) to educate or pass information. Alex and Lauren of Create and Go, and Avucado were making up to $50,000 monthly from blogging in 2017.

One can earn from blogging through various means like:

  • Google Adsense/ Paid Ads
  • Sponsored Posts
  • Selling Information via Guides, DIY help books etc
  • Selling Merchandize
Earning with this method might take a while, but it pays off overtime.

4. ECommerce:

ECommerce is simply buying and selling of products or services electronically over the internet. This business model became prominent in Nigeria in 2012

There are four main types of business models namely:

  • Business to Business (B2B): A company paying another company for an online invoicing software.
  • Business to Customer (B2C): Like you ordered a smart-watch from a seller online.
  • Consumer to Business (C2B): Freelancers bidding for jobs from businesses on platforms like Upwork e.g. designing a brochure for a hospital.
  • Consumer to Consumer (C2C): People selling to each other like on ebay, craigslist or jiji.

The eCommerce approach is more robust as it incorporates a blend of two or more of the above listed business models in disrupting traditional commerce as we know it. These models include the following:

  • Dropshipping
  • Direct to Consumer (D2C)
  • White labeling or Private labeling
  • Wholesale
  • Subscription Services
  • Mini-Importation

These eCommerce business models have given birth to a new age of entrepreneurs. With a low difficulty of entry, a lot of people and businesses have created or taken advantage of the opportunities online and this has created several millionaires and even billionaires.

I’ll write up about dropshipping, mini importation, and white labeling soon. Subscribe to my mailing list to receive a notification.

5. Online Courses

You may have noticed that there has been a surge in online training courses lately since the pandemic started. There is a rise in demand in certain skills e.g Graphic Design, Web Design, Virtual Assistants, Copywriters, Social Media Management etc. The resulting increase in available courses is a direct reaction to the increase in demand. This means that there is a market you can tap into by teaching those skills you already have.

You could be skilled in Playing a musical instrument, typing very fast, fluent in multiple languages, making shoes or baking. Whatever your skills are, there is a market out there for you right now.

Just make sure your course is:

  • Unique,
  • Concise,
  • Interesting and
  • Delivers great value

There are still many other ways to earn money while you are at home, and I shall update this list as time goes on. Feel free to drop a comment about ways to earn money from home in your location (do well to mention where you are). I’ll be reading through the comments. Stay safe.
